Custom woven labels are not just tags sewn into seams. They are the first thing buyers see when trying on a garment. They are a brand element that remains on the product after a hundred washes. They are a technical solution that must withstand industrial pressing, dry cleaning and years of wear without loss of readability, shape or colour. That is why choosing a supplier is not a purchasing step, but a strategic decision for manufacturers of apparel, footwear and outdoor gear.

Why woven labels succeed where other solutions fail

We regularly receive inquiries from European brands: “Why does our heat transfer print peel off by the third wash?”, “Why do rubber labels cause skin irritation?”. The answer lies in contact physics. A woven label is not an applied coating, but an integrated component. Its yarns are woven into a unified structure with the base fabric of the product. It moves along with the fabric, stretching and contracting synchronously. There is no material-to-material boundary and no delamination zone.
In cyclic tensile tests (ISO 13934-1), polyester woven labels retain up to 85% of their strength after 50 cycles — compared to just 32% for equivalent heat transfer prints.

The key mistake is choosing a label based on appearance alone. In fact, three parameters matter: weave density (120 to 220 threads per inch), base material type (polyester, cotton, blend), and colouring method (reactive dyeing vs. surface printing). Reactive dyeing penetrates deep into the fibre; the colour will not fade even with bleach. Surface printing on fabric lasts for a maximum of 15–20 washes.

How to avoid the three most common pitfalls when placing an order

In practice, 7 out of 10 initial orders for custom woven labels require revisions. This is not due to the supplier, but a lack of technical information at the start. Here is what we check first:

  • Layout format: EPS or AI files with vector outlines are mandatory. Raster PNG or JPG files cause fine details to blur when scaled for a font height of 12 mm.
  • Process compatibility: If the label is attached to seams by ultrasonic welding, special heat-resistant yarn (up to 220 °C) is required. Standard polyester will deform.
  • Packaging logistics: Small runs (starting from 500 pcs) are often packed in paper bags, which absorb moisture inside sea containers. We use vacuum packaging with silica gel desiccants even for trial batches.

A client from Europe once sent artwork with a gradient. Gradients cannot be achieved in woven label production; only sharp colour transitions are possible. We recommended reworking the design into a two-colour composition with an optical illusion. The finished product appears to have a gradient effect while retaining the reliable and durable properties of woven labels.

What full-cycle production delivers — illustrated with real lead times

The standard lead time for custom woven labels is 12–15 working days. This applies only when all stages are managed by one team, from the weaving loom to final packaging. External coordination between designers, weavers and packers adds a minimum of 7 days of delays and 3–4 rounds of approval iterations.

At our production base in Linnan, all operations — cutting, weaving, dyeing, final slitting and packaging — are completed within one facility. Every roll of raw material undergoes incoming inspection: shrinkage test, colour fastness (ISO 105-C06) and yarn strength check. The loom operator can detect deviations of 0.3 mm and adjust tension in real time. Final inspection is 100% visual check under a 5× magnifying glass. Result: defect rate below 0.17% for runs from 300 up to 50,000 pcs.

For European customers, we maintain dedicated logistics channels: FTL shipments to the EU with turnkey customs clearance, DHL express delivery of samples in 4–6 days, and local warehouse support for urgent restocking.

Custom woven labels – when to start the discussion

If your brand releases more than 5 styles per season, if you plan to enter the EU or US markets, or if your customers leave reviews such as “The stitching is neat, but the label fell off” — it is time to rethink your labelling approach. Contrary to common belief, woven labels do not raise production costs by 30%. For orders starting from 2000 pcs, the price per label ranges from 0.8 to 2.3 rubles, depending on complexity. Savings come from fewer returns, higher customer LTV and stronger brand trust.

Dongguan Jingrui Manufacturing Co., Ltd has been cooperating with European manufacturers since 2015. We do not merely sell labels — we help integrate woven labels into your workflow: select the optimal base material according to fabric type, adapt designs to match loom capabilities, and test samples on your equipment. Custom woven labels become a reliable solution when treated not as a consumable, but as an integral part of the product. Learn more at .www.jing-rui.cn.
