Snap-button webbing is far more than just a fastener. Over the past year, we have seen this solution used in 273 styles of clothing and accessories, ranging from children’s overalls to professional rucksacks for riggers.It provides a secure hold yet can be unfastened with one hand – even while wearing gloves. What’s more, it withstands a minimum of 5,000 snap-close and release cycles, when manufactured in compliance with GOST R ISO 12947-2 and having passed the fatigue failure test.

We do not choose it “for appearance alone”. We select it to solve specific practical tasks. For example: how to fasten the side pocket of a sports jacket so it does not come undone when squatting? How to dress a child quickly in a winter overall without losing tightness and insulation? How to make a bag strap adjustable, but without slippery buckles?
 
Snap-button webbing performs reliably in places where zippers catch on fabric pile and regular buttons tear off under sudden pulling force. Its advantage lies in the mechanics of engagement: the metal pin enters the polymer sleeve at a 12° angle, creating a retention force of up to 18 N for a 20 mm wide strap. This is 2.3 times higher than that of a comparable hook-and-loop webbing of the same size.
 
A client from Saint Petersburg ordered 12,000 metres of snap-button webbing for medical gowns — not for aesthetics, but because medical staff wash their hands frequently. The fabric does not absorb moisture, the buttons do not corrode, and the fastener remains functional and clean after 60 washes at 60 °C. Our tests confirmed: after 8 autoclaving cycles (134 °C, 2 atm), the plastic sleeves showed no deformation, and the metal parts did not develop any white residue.

 

What Fails — and How to Avoid It

 
Some people think: “If there’s a snap fastener, it must work.” In practice, however, 68% of failures stem not from component quality, but from installation errors.
 
The most common mistake is improper webbing tension during sewing. If the webbing sags by 1.5 mm before fastening, the metal pin fails to align with the centre of the sleeve. The result: you hear the click, but there is no secure locking.
 
A second mistake is using a universal 90/14 needle for all types of fabric. Denim requires a sharp-point 100/16 needle. For knitwear, a rounded-tip 75/11 needle is needed. We have seen cases where sewing fine silk with a 90/14 needle pulls thread through the sleeve, distorting its geometry. After three weeks of use, the snap fastener no longer holds securely.
 
The third error is cutting corners on snap spacing. The standard pitch between fasteners is 35 mm. Increasing it to 50 mm raises the load on each snap pair by 40%. In one instance, this caused the pin to break the very first time the coat was worn. The solution is simple: for products under high mechanical stress, use a 25 mm pitch and reinforced sleeves with a double locking ring.

 

How to Choose — Not by Catalog, but by Application

 

Webbing width is not a decorative feature.15 mm is suitable for children’s clothing and lightweight bags.25 mm is for backpacks with a volume of 30 litres and above.32 mm is intended exclusively for workwear — for example, Class 3B protective suits that require full perimeter sealing.

 
Materials make all the difference:
 
  • Polyester base — 100% resistant to UV radiation and dry cleaning, but low elasticity (elongation ≤ 3%)
  • Nylon base — elongation up to 8%, ideal for knitwear, but requires protection against chlorine
  • Cotton base with polyurethane coating — used only in eco-friendly projects; service life up to 2,000 cycles
 

There are three types of snaps:
