A leather label is far more than just a brand decoration. It directly reflects product texture, embodies exquisite craftsmanship, and serves as one of the first touchpoints between products and consumers. We have seen leather labels on outdoor backpacks remain intact after five years of rigorous use in mountaineering scenarios, and those on jeans retain clear embossed patterns even after 120 washes. Nevertheless, quality defects are quite common: labels peel off within three months, logos fail to match the designated colors, or crack when first tried on. The root cause is that the selection and installation of leather labels are professional technical procedures, not mere decorative work.

 

How to Choose: Three Indispensable Selection Criteria

 
First, leather material. Leather products vary greatly in quality on the market. Our factory exclusively uses natural chrome-tanned leather with a thickness of 0.8–1.2 mm. Leather thinner than 0.8 mm is prone to deformation during stitching, while material over 1.2 mm cannot fit smoothly over bent fabric surfaces. Artificial leather and PU leather easily lose luster and develop cracks at bending points.
 
Second, logo processing techniques. Ink-free embossing fully preserves the natural texture of leather and delivers the best durability. Laser engraving creates sharp contrast, yet the power must be precisely controlled — excessive power will scorch the label edges. Digital printing is suitable for complex gradient patterns, but its service life is 40% shorter than that of embossing.
 
Third, shape and edge finishing. Rounded corners effectively prevent curling and abrasion. Square corners allow higher production efficiency, yet they are more likely to peel off at the corners.

 

Why Adhesives Are Not Always Ideal & Alternative Solutions

 

Most label detachment issues stem from improper installation methods. Though spray adhesives and hot melt adhesives deliver instant bonding results, label edges will bulge and lift after 2 to 3 weeks. The fundamental reason is that such adhesives cannot adapt to the porous structure of leather and fabrics. We test adhesive compatibility across 17 types of materials, ranging from thick cotton fabric to elastic neoprene.
 
The optimal composite bonding process in the industry is as follows: hot pressing at 130°C under 3.5 bar pressure for 18 seconds. For products made of highly elastic fabrics such as sportswear, ultrasonic edge welding is applied along the label perimeter. This technology forms invisible micro-weld seams that keep labels firmly attached even when the fabric is stretched to three times its original length.

 

Stitching Process: Applicable Scenarios and Standard Operations

 

Stitching remains the gold standard for premium products and heavy-duty items, including backpacks, outdoor shoes and tote bags. Strict standards apply to stitching work. We adopt 120 Tex Teflon-coated polyester threads, which are waterproof, anti-corrosive and mildew-resistant.
We set the stitch pitch at 2.8 mm, different from the 3.5 mm pitch used in mass production, to reduce stress concentration at needle holes. The distance between stitches and label edges is critical and must be no less than 1.5 mm. A narrower gap may tear the leather during use, while an overly wide gap will cause the label to shift loosely. In addition, the leather must be fixed onto a non-woven backing before stitching to avoid micro-cracks in leather fibers caused by needle penetration.
